Century Old Tortoise Becomes Parent For Baby "Water Horse" Hippo Owen

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away."

Niarobi KENYA (AFP) Baby hippopotamus that survived December 26, 2005 tsunami waves on Kenya's coast formed unbreakable bond with 100 year-old giant male tortoise in Mombassa Animal Reserve. Owen the 6 month-old hippo (weighing 650 pounds) was swept into the Indian Ocean from the Sabaki River and then forced inshore. Wildlife rangers rescued him after he lost his mother and became severely traumatized. The tortoise that he landed on became his surrogate mother. "They swim, eat, and sleep together,"said ecologist Paula Kahumba (manager of Lafarge Park). "It's incredible...the tortoise seems to be very happy with being a mother," she told AFP.

"The hippo follows the tortoise exactly the way it follows its mother. If someone approaches the tortoise, the hippo becomes agressive, as if protecting its biological mother," she continued.

Hippos are social animals that like to stay with their mothers for four years," Kahumba explained. This is a real story that shows tht our differences don't matter much when we need the comfort of another. We could all learn a lesson from these two creatures of God; "Look beyond the differences and find a way to walk the path together."

The Belmont stakes came in 2005 and went,

Looked at Tim Woolley's site for today's bit of news,
Saw my tribute to Lost In The Fog had some views.

"Yikes," snorts Barbaro. "They'll sure be in for a big surprise."
Lost In The Fog's became Lost In The Wood's before our eyes.
Then Lost In The Fog gave Barbaro a call.
"Hey, what's with me Lost In The Wood's," from his stall.
BJ retorts, "Lightning struck "Crafty Shaw's" DSL,
Wireless Router, Internet Explorer wipeout as well."

"Some say I got high on too many peppermints and grass,
Must be "Mischievous Bobby" making another pass.
Who knew it was really Windows XP's "Buggy Colt."
Along with "Stormy's" mischievous lightning bolt."
Off to our best neighbor's house trotted Crafty and me,

HUMOR UPDATE 1 (AUG 23, 2006): C. Johansen WONDERS How did Lost In The Fog Become Lost In the Woods? Well, thanks to Bobby's antics with some mischievously grazing he changed the Fog to Woods when I wasn't looking. Melissa H. knew it all along..."I told you Bobby was getting HIGH on all that grass! In fact, I mentioned it at the Tim Woolley Message Board in 'NEW BOBBY's MESSAGE TO THE BARBAROMANIACS." And you thought he was only good at grabbing those pepperments off the ledges before they fall. What will the ICU nursing staff think of next to keep Bobby amused? He's quite charasmatic and funny indeed! NEW WORD for what BARBARO means is MISCHIEF-MAKER.

Part II of Mike C's Race Call to Honor Barbaro (August 1, 2006)

MORE OF THE CALL...And the horses thunder down the backstretch,Barbaro still has a lot of work to do", says Durkin. "He's back in the race, but he's not in his usual up close stalking position after the 2 disasterous mishaps in this race".As the leaders begin to hit the far turn Durkin is calling the positions of the horses in the race using names and colors to describe them in his adjective littered call.As he gazes thru his binocs and he gets to BARBARO, now in mid pack we pick up his call." And now BARBARO IS BACK,here in mid pack an unlikely spot in both a bad and good way, he's usually close to the pace but with what happened today its already an amazing comeback.Edgar pulls down a pair of goggles and he almost seems to be smiling now, WHY COULD HE BE SMILING??.DID WE NOT SEE THE BEST OF BARBARO ALREADY TODAY??.Edgar still has a handful of reins ladies and gentleman meaning he still has a ton of horse under him"..This could be a comeback of TITANIC proportions, Edgar is smiling like a guy holding 5 aces, he knows he's on a time bomb here waiting to explode, but after all the hardships thrown BARBAROS' way just how much is lift in the tank???.But by the look on Edgar's face, and determination in BARBAROS eyes I'm not willing to bet against the miracle we may just see here today".....The crowds roar heightens with every stride of the horses,you can now hear cries of "C'MON BARBARO,LETS GO BOY" becoming more evident above the thunderous roars of the thousands anticipating the tremendous finish that lies ahead.....

Dr. Sweeney kept things very low key as she, Kenneth Florist, and Barbaromaniacs decided to 'SURPRISE Dr. Dean Richardson 5 days early for his birthday truly August 30, 2006. On Friday August 25, 2006 Dr. Sweeney "called him to his office" and there was not just a birthday cake but a huge check of $3,851.00 for "The Barbaro Fund -- signed by none other than the Babaromaniacs (group sited at Tim Woolley Racing). Reports say Dr. Richardson "was touched" and moved by not just this generous gift but gift certificates to some nice restaurants by Kenneth Florist who bring New Bolton Center staff special goodies for them and Barbaro.

The Barbaro Fund, originally set up by a very generous anonymous donator, is being used

to improve New Bolton Center's veterinary services and medical equipment in need of upgrade.

The donated gifts will greatly help all animals like Barbaro and "countless others in their time of need." More about this fine fund set up honoring Barbaro can be viewed at UPENN VET's ALUMNI GIVING. But there is more giving around the corner.

Barbaro's Wisconsin Ambassadors received a surprise $100.00 ticket prize today that they are donating to The Barbaro Fund. Excerpt: "I had an employee (from our advertising agency) that was leaving to become a screenwiter (his dream). So we took him out to bid him fairwell and goodluck...and wished him much success. As we were having dinner, one of the employees bought a couple of those scratch off tickets and 'CAN YOU BELIEVE, THE TICKET HAD A $100.00 PRIZE?' The winner is our USA TEAM BARBARO captain and said, "Let's give it to The Barbaro Fund" -- Debra Lopez.

On August 25, 2006 Barbaro's New Hampshire Ambassadors received a special matching gift donation from President Dennis Hampt of Springtime Inc. to help them send another month's supply of Horse Spirulina & Joint Health Care Nutritonals to Barbaro -- Cle Shaw.

An even more delightful news was sent by Mike Rea who wrote a very special letter to the Inspirational Champion. He and Barbaro will both have long recoveries together and both will look forward to when these two friends can visit each other. Below is the wonderfully touching words Mike composed himself just for Barbaro to express his heartfelt thanks as well as his sister's.

August 27, 2006 UPDATE: Balimore Sun's Sandra McKee says Barbaro's Surgeon is please with colt's progress...Horse is still at least 6 months away from putting weight on injured leg.

In a phone interview on August 24, 2006: Dr. Richardson gladly said,"His progress since early July when he foundered so badly, well there is no doubt I'm happy. I'm thrilled with how well he has progressed."... "It could be six months or a year before he can fully bear his weight on all four feet to survive."..."It's very different horse to horse, and we're not going to know until we give it time. No one is setting an artbitrary growth rate (referring to Barbaro's laminitic left hoof with mostly all hoof wall removed). We're just letting him heal as fast or slow as he can."

To date there are really no prosthetic hoof devices that would work for Barbaro. "Sometimes hooves are rebuilt, but to do that, there has to be a partial hoof wall there to build something on to it. In his case over 90% of hoof wall was removed so what people don't understand is that this means all that remains is soft tissue covering a bone."

"His hoof has grown about one centimeter...and if it weren't for his left hoof having laminitis he would have been out of his right leg cast by now. His right leg isn't healed

to where I feel absolutely comfortable having him out of the cast, because he needs to protect his left foot," continued Dr. Richardson. "Normally, he'd use the left hoof to protect his right. But in this case, he has to use the right to protect the left. So, we're giving him more time in the cast to manage him safely."

"His bandages are changed daily and we plan to keep close watch on both hind legs for changes. He will continue to keep his right leg cast for several more weeks and may change it if Barbaro appears uncomfortable...His pain medications have been cut back to "a couple aspirin a day" in human tems and continues on controlled grazing for about half-an-hour. He's put on some weight and has mentally brightened...I don't want people to think that it is because he's going outside that he has been doing better. It's because he was doing better that he has been allowed to go outside," spoke Dr. Richardson.

"He has reached a point where it was easy for him to walk around. He's gaining weight, happy, and walking on both feet. But his mental attitude is better, which you'd expect, and his strength is a little better because he's getting some exercise - just like a human patient would be able to get out of his hospital bed and walk around."

August 26, 2006 UPDATE: Mike continues his brain injury rehabilitation at Kernan Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. As of August 23, 2006 his family reports his recovery advances each week by more miraculous news with answers to prayers -- Mike Rea family. It will be a long year ahead for him and Barbaro in their recoveries. Our wish is that both will be reunited as Mike is clearly part of Fair Hill Training Center's family. Another prayer vigil is being held Saturday, August 26, 2006 at 7 pm EST.

Where family is concerned, Michael Matz is right there visiting Barbaro daily and has started taking afternoon brief walks with him. It is great news to see them both outside together again enjoying each other's company. Special Thanks to Dr. Richardson for helping make it happen.

Named for the late Racing Hall of Fame trainer Jim (Sunny Jim) Fitzsimmons, this award is given to those who exemply Horseracing's spirit. The "Team Barbaro" group will include Barbaro himself, owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson, trainer Michael Matz, assistant trainer and exercise rider Peter Brette, and jockey Edgar Prado. But it does not end there.

Dr. Dean Richardson and the New Bolton Center will also receive the Joe Palmer Award for their meritorious service to horseracing. It is in honor of former New York Herald Tribune Turf writer for horseracing news. John Pricci has a very nice commentary on Barbaro and company. Barbaro continues to be "everyone's favorite sentimental choice" according to Todd Pletcher, trainer for Bluegrass Cat who is a top contender against Tom Albertrani's Bernadini in today's Travers 137th Mid-Summer Derby. Pricci stated, "In essence, Barbaro is so much more. He is a horse who continues to demonstrate what it means to be a thoroughbred. Intelligent and strong, showing a will to live beyond anything we've seen in four decades of watching horses do what they were bred to do."

"Barbaro's struggle for survival has provided inspiration for Internet poets and his daily regimen has been chronicled nightly on network broadcasts whenever newsworthy developments arose. His story reached out and touched even more people than the remarkable Afleet Alex did a few years ago. The racing business may be trending downward but a nation has shown it cares about what happens to Barbaro. It is for that reason he will get my vote for Horse Of The Year 2006, an honor he is unlikely to win no matter how his story ends."

Barbaro even touches the heart of Delco Times Editor, Phil Heron. He refers to the Belmont Stakes back on June 5, 2006 but carries the genuine sentiment for our Kentucky Derby winner even today. "The eyes of the horseracing world will zero in this Saturday. Not mine. I've seen enough. I hope Barbaro continues his his miraculous recovery. I will continue to wonder how these marvelous animals can perform these tasks on legs that would make a ballerina envious."

Barbaro's Improvement "Absolutely Thrills" His Chief Surgeon

Yesterday, Dr. Dean Richardson was informally interviewed by DMV Dr. Debbye Turner (correspondent for CBS News Early Show)on LIVE VIDEO. She was amazed at "really great Barbaro looked" and even had to jog to keep up along side him as Dr. Dean took him on his late afternoon walk they do together. He said, "I am thrilled he pulls me around and that he's able to walk at a brisk pace comfortably...absolutely thrilled. He is doing far better than I thought he'd ever do...I am just thrilled."

Even though he's been on bedrest for a long time he's still a very strong horse.

What you're seeing today is nothing quite like he really is when healthy. Just ask his trainer Michael Matz. It takes at least 3 or 4 people to handle him. He is quite a handful."

Barbaro would prove that when Dr. Turner held her hand underneath his muzzle. He nipped several times as if to bite her. Dr. Richardson explained, "he's used to getting treats and thinks you have something for him. It's best not to tease him or he'll keep nipping."

The interview switched to what key factors turned Barbaro's recovery around and where is in terms of getting out of the woods. Dr. Richardson reported, "The attributing key factors to Barbaro's improved recovery are outstanding nursing care and effective pain management control keeping him comfortable. His fabulous attitude also played a key part."

"He just kept taking the blows thrown at him and he keeps fighting. If you can keep pain under control, it keeps a horse from giving up on life. Not eating, drinking, and interacting with your caregiver are signs he won't survive. That is why pain control to keep him comfortable is so important." Barbaro was on a number of pain killers included narcotics.

Summarizing, "he received various pain killers through an epidural catheter in his hind pelvis. He also received anesthesia making it easier. He had the catheter for over a month or more which is rather unusual. However, he is no longer using one. He gets an equivalent of 2 aspirin a day now to comfortably manage his pain."

When asked about his thoughts on when Barbaro might be out of the woods, Dr. Richardson

replied, "He still isn't out of the woods but at the moment he has a clearer path to walk through.

I can't really be confident until he's out of his R Hind leg cast." His concern remains about protecting Barbaro's right leg so that "he doesn't overload his left hind leg and laminitic foot."

Regarding Barbaro's chances for improving recovery, Dr. Richarson believes first is his survival However, he cautioned that Barbaro would be at least several more months in Intensive Care at NBC. "This is the best place for him so he his healing progress can be very closely managed, especially his left hind foot and the fusion process of his pastern bone in his right hind leg."

According to Dr. Turner's comment, "While no amount of money guarantees Barbaro's survival," she did say the Jacksons have already poured out over tens of thousands of dollars for his medical costs. Dr. Richardson reminded her, " if this were a human recovering, their medical care would be well over half a million to a million dollars. At least, we are nowhere near to that...not even close to that figure for Barbaro's veterinary care."

Dr. Richardson concluded that first -- ideally for Barbaro to have a full recovery, he must first regrow his L hoof completely and have full weight-bearing capability on a solidly fused pastern of his R hind leg. And second -- if he does recover fully, "he will certainly be able to do more than just walk again." He is hopeful that "by sometime in 2008, Barbaro will be capable of mounting mares and siring offspring."

So, as he continues to improve his recovery we have cause to celebrate...

"Barbaro Remains A Comfortable Happy Horse"

KENNETT SQUARE, PA — Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro remains comfortable according to veterinarians at Penn’s George D. Widener Hospital . “Barbaro is doing well on both hind limbs,” said Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery. “Because of this, we do not plan to change his right hind cast in the next two weeks.” The colt’s left hind foot has laminitis, but Barbaro seems comfortable with that foot as well. “He needs to continue to improve over the next few months before we will have a better idea about his long term comfort.” said Dr. Richardson. “Barbaro’s appetite and his attitude right now are phenomenal; he attacks his feed and when he goes out to graze, he acts like he thinks he could train.” Doctors remain cautious about Barbaro’s prognosis because, according to Dr. Richardson, there is no assurance that he will surmount all of his medical problems. “Right now, he is a surprisingly happy horse,” he said. “He is gaining weight and has had his pain medications reduced without any effect on his well being. His strength and overall appearance have been improving since he became well enough to be walked outside each day.”

Above is a tribute to Lost In The Fog's Homecoming to Golden Gate Fields in California to spend his last remaining young days with trainer Greg Gilchrist, Harry Leo (LITF's owner) and groom Pascual Garcia. Terminal Lymphoma was confirmed late Friday evening by the UC DAVIS veterinarians who did special bloodwork, MRI (magnetic resonic imaging) to diagnose his condition. He did arrive home safely and still has a vigorous appetite.
Everyone was very happy to see him and will pamper him in his last few months of young life left. Known as the 2005's best sprinter, Lost In The Fog received the coveted Eclipse award at 4 years old. Enjoy the Barbara Livingston photos which can be viewed at with many more at her site.

Monday mid-noon August 21, 2006, after Dr. Richardson and his top medical team performed an extremely difficult surgery on ALCOR, he died while in transport back to Erie Zoo in Pennsylvania.

UPA photo shows Alcor the polar bear undergoing surgery at the New Bolton Center. He originally shattered his leg/forepaw while playing with his brother. "Doctors say the operation was difficult" as they operated on him Monday about noontime, August 21, 2006. The surgery lasted over 4 hours. Dr. Richardson said, "It was an extremely difficult surgery. The ulna forearm was broken just above the carpus wrist and we were able to repair it satisfactorily with 2 Synthes locking compression plates. However, the radius was shattered in too many pieces to allow accurate reconstruction. So, we used a single plate to partially stabilize it."

Alcor was listed in guarded conditon after the operation. Erie Zoo officials say he died in transport during the 7 hour trip back home. ABC 6 ACTION NEWS

Update 496: A great article from the New York Times: With Loving and Costly Care, Barbaro's Long Odds Improve notes Barbaro's current status. The following are excerpts:"He's been very, very good on his legs," said Dr. Dean Richardson, his surgeon and the man who leads him outside each day. "It's exciting. He's improving."
Dr. Richardson warned that Barbaro was hardly out of the woods and that a full recovery would not be evident for months. Still, he said he was encouraged by the progress.

Barbaro Continues To Amaze And Graze Much To Medical Team Barbaro's Delight Recent photos taken by Sabina Pierce (University of Pennsylvania) show Barbaro still enjoying mischieveous nips in first photo "Me and Barbaro". NBC's ICU staff hold a huge morning round "Meet and Greet" session with Dr. Dean Richardson's favorite charismatic boy. Barbaro continues to improve with 30 minute outdoor grazing. Dr. Richardson sees Barbaro/Bobby is having a bit of trouble keeping the flies away because of his "too short" tail. But never fear, the
ICU team show up from the rear to lend special assistance in the form of powerful bug repellent.
Sabina's latest photo shows Barbaro happily grazing and loving the sunshine and fresh air which he sorely missed for almost 3 months. In Jeannine Edwards Interview (ABC news 3 pm EST) with the Jacksons (ALEX update 435), this is what transpired. Gretchen and Roy were very upbeat with Barbaro's latest improvement. Just a few weeks back, they thought it was the end when Dr. Dean told them their Bobby was badly foundering in his LH hoof/foot. 'Everyone was crying including Dean. He had really fallen in love with Barbaro and there was only one other horse that he ever became really attached to...an Arabian stallion that also had a lot of charisma and intelligence." Gretchen and Roy also stated that they were "so pleased with how Barbaro has kept his fighting spirit and appears to be turning a corner. He is no longer on IV drips, the epidural is out, he just receives some pain management shots and spending less time in the sling...It was Dean's idea to take Barbaro out for grass the other day... We were all here visiting when out of the blue Dean says, "Let's take him outside!" So out he marched (Dean leading him), eyes wide open and eager, and Roy said Barbaro just stood there looking around for a few minutes, just taking it all in before dropping his head to graze. Roy and Gretchen Jackson both stated, "Michael has tirelessly gone to see Barbaro every day...he is so personally and emotionally invested in his horse's ordeal." Roy mentioned, "he continues to be amazed at the interest in and the outpouring of support for Barbaro's condition...they simply cannot believe it. It's bafffling, but wonderful...They are happy to help keep the world informed of how Barbaro is doing because they know how people are yearning for updates. " They also visit Tim Woolley's Racing website. Jeannine says that it's the "Go-To-Site-for Barbaro." The Jacksons also own Showing Up who continues to amaze others by winning his races too (referencing his winning Secretariat Stakes as Marcus Hersh and others ask about Barbaro). Peter Brette also visits Barbaro whenever he gets the chance according to Alex.
Sunday Morning update from Alex: Barbaro continues to remain stable and comfortable but in serious condition. Will get more later....in the day...

New York Racing Association's photo shows Lost In The Fog and Russell Baze powering home to win is $150,000 Bay Shore Race April 9, 2005. Later this 4 year-old colt became sprinter of the year winning the coveted Eclipse Award 2005. ESPN

The following is a tribute to Lost In The Fog who will return to Golden Gate Fields home later today, Sunday afternoon. He has terminal lymphoma of the spleen with an inoperable tumor near his spine. University of California DAVIS Veterinary School of Medicine and trainer Greg Gilchrist decided that his last days should be spent in a comfortable place he loves most. LITF's cancer has metastasized and everyone was visibly shaken by the news. Another egg-sized splenic turmor was discovered Friday August 18th where the original one was sited. "As his trainer, we've been through so much together. He did so much for me I owe that much to the horse. He is like a brother to me. I have more respect for this horse than 70 to 75 percent of the people I deal with.
If he were human, he'd be the type of guy you want to hang around. This will be a very tough time for me." When its his time, Lost In The Fog will be cremated and returned to his upbringing at
Southern Chase Farm in Ocala, Florida.

Now we all understand just why and how much Barbaro and Lost In The Fog and others like them mean so very much to their trainers who have been through all the tough and great times together.

I searched o'er all the world for one thing perfect.

I looked at castles and kingdoms men erect.

Where Barbaro Recovers Each TIme He Needs Some Orthopedic Surgery &
Rehabilitation

On May 21, 2006 and subsequent 4 other surgeries, Barbaro is gently lifted our of the recovery pool area with assistance. Here at New Bolton Center is The Mahlon Kline Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Center revolutionary recovery pool. Quote from Chicago Tribune VIDEO (7/31/06, www.timwoolleyracing.com): "Normally, horses coming out of anesthesia after surgery are lying down in a recovery room. As they wake up, they must struggle to get to their feet--a dicey maneuver on freshly repaired ankles and legs. Moreover, a postoperative horse may be confused and thrash about in the recovery room, further jeopardizing the surgeon's work.

...Barbaro is lifted from the operating table in a sling susupended from a ceiling monorail system that can handle patients weighing 1,000 llbs. or more. From here, he is conveyed to a nearby pool,
a bright blue circle of heated water, some 20 feet deep.

There he is lowered into a black rubber raft with four long sleeves enclosing legs. Once the raft is inflated, the horse remains floating there, typically for one to two hours with ICU nurse sitting close beside it. Thus, when he awakens, there is nothing hard anywhere near an injured leg, no matter how much he thrashes about." The tail is tied off with a rope and because Barbaro struggled and thrashed upon wakening this is how he pulled out and lost a lot of his hair tails which are now growing back.

On July 3, 2006 Barbaro undergoes another surgery to repair his R. Hind Leg where screws shifted and bent. To the right, Dr. Richardson and medical team Barbaro review his recent radiographs taken of his Charismatic famous patient.

Once again, this scene is typical as Dr. Richardson and Dr. Emma Adams continue to do 6 cast changes to date for Barbaro's leg. If he continues to do well, the next cast change will be in three weeks with a possibility of coming out of the cast maybe late September.

Update 482: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (friday night). I saw Michael Matz on my third set, we were behind the gate. The conversation behind the gate quickly turned to Lost in the Fog. Very sad. I want to thank Russell Baze for the time he gave me last night to provide us an interview, and some insight into The Fog. Update 483: Peter Brette may be visiting Barbaro today. If he does, I will follow up and get a report. I just saw Lisa, Better Talk Now's exercise rider. He is doing well after the Arlington Million. He has be out twice (training) across the fields. He will likely do that for a week. They are considering the Melbourne Cup as an option for him later in the fall. That would be TOO cool!

Update 479: I am attending the NTRA conference, scheduled for 6:45 pm re: Lost in the Fog (thanks Ed Fountaine, New York Post for alerting me to the conference). A transcript will be available on monday. LITF's trainer and vet are online for the teleconference.
Vet:Unfortunately two more tumours in his abdomen, and another very large tumour along the roof of his back, about the size of a football (not that shape). This one cannot be removed surgically. His condition is terminal.
Trainer:He is not in a lot of pain, he just gets uncomfortable at times. The end is inevitable, and do not want the horse to go through things he does not need to. Want to provide some final quality of life, pampered and cared for with his own people around him. He won't take it too far. Mr. Aleo (owner), Harry is a tough old guy, but this is bringing him to his knees. LITF is a hell of a warrior.

POLAR BEAR ALCOR WELCOME TO NEW BOLTON CENTER! (all 750 lbs, BIG BOY)

Associated Press Wire last night released along with KDKA (Pittsburg, PA News Source) Dr. Dean Richardson will be getting ready to save Erie, PA Zoo's polar bear with a broken leg. Thursday, doctors examined the 7- year - old bear "ALCOR" and thought they would have to euthanize him. They didn't think they could fix the 2 broken bones (front radius) above his right paw. Zoo officials suspect he broke it playing with his brother Mizar also same age and there since 2001. Due to the breaks being extremely close to the front paw, the resident vets did not believe the radius bone could safely be secured using long enough pins and rods to permit healing. Cleveland, Ohio Zoo Veterinarian contacted Erie Zoo putting them in touch with Dr. Richardson's OrthopedicMedical Team who believes they can safely fix Alcor's front leg.

Barbaro's Journey to New Bolton Center began May 20, 2006 when he suffered multiple fractures of his right hind leg and dislocation of his hock. Emergency medical crews loaded Barbaro into an ambulance heading to NBC as Dr. Richardson flew back in from a trip. Next morning, he and his medical team would operate for over 5 hours to save Barbaro's shattered pastern bone. Using 27 screws, hip bone grafts, and plate he stabilized the Heroic patient. For next 7 weeks, Barbaro would fight to live and survive 5 operations including his left hoof resection. He underwent the lifesaving surgery July 13, 2006. Acute Laminitis set in causing his temperature to rise above 102 indicating there was systemic infection. He was place on antibiotics and epidurals for pain and infection while Dr.Richardson and his medical team resected over 90% of his hoof wall, dead laminae, and some of his bottom sole.

To assist with his recovery, he was placed in the Anderson Sling during the day but was allowed to rest on soft hay from 7 pm until about 9:00 am the next day. He also would have special baths

massages, and daily cast and wound care for his injuries and surgical sites. Special care was given to ensure his legs and feet were protected from water as seen above.

ICU Nurses, staff, and doctors continued to monitor our charismatic Champion. Monitored 24/7 he had vitals taken 4 times a day and dressing changes twice daily. His casts were checked for any signs of breakage and sites closely monitored for infection. (See Dr. Richardson's Response to Live Questions section on the side link). Total of 6 cast changes were done to date, due partly to the surgeries of his right hind leg needing four screws replaced and infection removed internally from the pastern bone site. Plus, they needed to see how well Barbaro's leg was healing. As of August 17th, the next cast change will be in about 3 weeks. Barbaro continues to beat the 50/50 odds and is responding well. He eats, drinks, and rests which is very important to his recovery. His appetite has improved to where he is putting some weight back on as noticed by Dr. Kathy Anderson (Fair Hill Training Veterinarian) who recently visited him.

Above, Dr. Richardson and Dr. Emma Adams put are putting one of the several new casts on Barbaro's right hind leg. He has been an exceptionally well-behaved patient tolerating the numerous medical procedures and cast changes.

GRAZING FOR FIRST TIME

For the first time in almost 3 months, Barbaro enjoys hand grazing on a shank with Dr. Dean Richardson by his side. He was permitted to munch on grass for 15 minutes his first time. Now he is spending about 30 minutes with Dr. Richardson late afternoons in a nearby secluded area close to the ICU. He looks forward to these outtings as much as Dr. Richardson does. And, he no longer requires use of his sling to support his weight and rest his legs. He is lying down now in a full upright position eating very special Timothy Hay Mix among other special nutritionals. Dr. Kathy Anderson's recent second visit confirmed this. Barbaro continues to be in stable but serious condition at New Bolton Center. His vitals, bloodwork, weight, and pain relief continue to improve. He is no longer on pain relieving epidurals and they have been able to scale down the amount of pain meds needed to keep Babaro comfortable. Next update is scheduled for Tuesday, August 22, 2oo6 unless something changes.

There appears to be a pretty obvious upbeat mood within the barn judging by the poor jokes being cracked at my reporting efforts!updated friday 7:10am.

Barbaro has another comforable and stable afternoon at New Bolton Center and enjoyed more time outdoors grazing. This evening will hopefully be the same stable news we have been receiving these past several days. (Updated 6:00 pm EST)

Last evening at about 6:45 pm EST, Bloodhorse.com hosted a special editon featuring questions and live responses with Dr. Dean Richardson, Barbaro's chief surgeon and lifesaver. Since the Preakness accident back on May 20, 2006 to date, New Bolton Center's orthopedic horse surgeon has been in the public eye. Largely due to Barbaro's extremely high profile case, there has been overwhelming requests for more accurate information about our "Charismatic" Hero.
Over 400 requests came in and a moderator reviewed those most relevant. All however, were forwarded to staff at NBC because a phenomenal number also sent encouraging words and concerns for the NBC Team caring for Barbaro. Ron Mitchell, editor for Talkin Horses thanked everyone for their participation.
Summarizing, there were four major areas of strong interest which are:
First - How Barbaro's case has affected Dr. Richardson emotionallly and professionally.
Second - Barbaro's ICU care related to daily rituals for his fractured right hind leg and resected laminitic hoof. Dr. Richardson reveals higher % of hoof removed and why.
Third - involved Laminitis and progression of his recovery and possible setbacks
And fourth - how effective Pain Control plays a critical comfort role for healing in Barbaro's full recovery. What is his prognosis longterm.

Excerpts follow: (Alex Brown thinks like we do....hmm)
"The only reason I became a vet was because I fell in love with horses. I became very involved working with them. If you do that, you get to the point where you love working on horses. I can't deny the fact that (Barbaro) he is very smart and particularly a charismatic horse. He is remarkably quick to pick up when you are trying to help him. Those are the sorts of things that make you like the horse a lot. You are also talking about being in the presence of greatness. And, I think he truly was a great horse who did not have the chance to show it. All those things combined, it is hard not to be emotionally involved with it. I also have a long relationship with and like for the Jacksons and the Matzes."
Responding to emotional attachment and Barbaro's intelligence he said, " I have been very attached to a lot of my patients. The type of work I do (unfortunately) does not always result in a quick fix, so some of my successes and many of my failures stay in the hospital for a long time. I became a veterinarian because I loved horses, so it isn't too hard to get attached to those that you work on for a long time. I am certainly not alone. We have had patients that are so popular that the nursing staff will show up to see them when they come back to the hospital for a follow-up visit."
Also, "I personally care a lot about the equine industry and I want people to understand that there are people like the Jacksons who truly care about their horses...Professionally, my favorite part initially was the challenge of the procedure and the aftercare. My favorite part now is simply trying to save his life. He is a very personable young colt, truly charismatic."
Second - Regarding Barbaro's ICU care: "He gets ICU checks by the nurses four times daily (vital signs, checking how much he's eating, drinking, manure/urine production etc.). He is fed grain mixes, four times daily. He receives free choice alfalfa and timothy hay mix. I change his Left hind foot bandage around 6 am and walk him about 30 minutes in the late afternoon. He is no longer being put in a sling. Previously, we were letting him out of the sling from about 7 pm until 9 am. The Jacksons and Mr. Matz visit at various times and Mrs. Jackson always brings some Lael Farm grass hand picked for him. He gets groomed and bathed at various times. Medications are given at various intervals. Previously, he was on a number of constant intravenous infusions and epidural pain medication. His management is much simpler right now because he is doing so well."
More...referencing Barbaro's hoof resection: "The hoof wall (the hard keratinized portion) including his sole was removed. We eventually removed about 90% of it. The time to completely regrow a hoof varies, but a reasonable estimate would be about 9 - 12 months. He will be considered out of the woods when there's an acceptably strong structure to his Left Hind foot and complete integrity, comfort, and strength in his Right Hind leg... Regarding his leg surgery, "the long hind pastern bone was shattered pieces. They were markedly displaced. The long pastern bone was essentially exploded. Only a few free fragments of cortical (dense) bone were removed. These were pieces that were unattached to any shred of soft tissue. We used about 40cc of cancellous bone graft taken from his right tuber coxae (point of the hip)." ..."A younger horse heals more rapidly. Both his fractures and his LH hoof would be far more difficult to manage in an older horse."
Healing Length time for the Pastern Bone fusion: " It looked excellent during the last cast change. We only assess it carefully when we have the cast off because the x-ray doesn't go clearly through the cast. It looked like it was really progressing well. We did that procedure in early July and the soonest I would expect it to be solid enough to take out of the cast would be early September. But it could be later. It is all depending upon what it looks like."
Third, lots of questions to Barbaro's Acute Laminitis: After his LH foot heals, "he absolutely will have a higher risk of laminitis and other foot problems in the LF foot. A horse that has had it once definitely is at a higher risk of having it again. Understand that laminitis can be caused by uneven weight-bearing distribution...There is always unequal weight-bearing. His bone was broken. We don't expect him to have equal weight-bearing. It is a matter of degree and , to some extent, luck whether or not they founder. Some horses can stand on three legs for months without developing laminitis. Others founder within days."
Also in reference to diet: "There is a common misconception about grains causing laminitis. Alfalfa and grain DO NOT cause Laminitis in a case such as this. Overeating can cause Laminitis but the mechanisms are quite different. A horse in Barbaro's condition NEEDS to eat a lot of high quality feed in order to maintain his weight and optimize healing."
On Barbaro's laminitic hoof resection: "Hoof resection doesn't "prevent" rotation of the coffin bone. Rotation is defined by the coffin bone's relationship to the hoof and by the relationship of the coffin bone to the middle phalanx (short pastern bone). When the hoof wall is gone, the former is irrelevant. The major thing that was done to treat the rotation of the P3 was to cut the deep digital flexor tendon. That helps maintain the correct alignment of his phalanges (bones below the fetlock). As far as any possible aggravation from a special left hind support shoe causing his acute laminitis, "I don't know that it had an effect one way or the other."
Specific treaments for his laminitic hoof: " I have been reluctant to and will not say what brand names we are using, but it is a very simple treatment. He basically gets his foot cleaned daily and and a very generic antibiotic. The only thing we are putting on it is a silver sulfur diozine that is non-irritating. We put a padded bandage on his foot and put the foot in a boot which has several pieces of foam at the bottom."
Survival rate of horses with Laminitis: "I don't know... A Lot of people just don't treat this severe a case that often. Treating the laminitis is a nursing skill. Plus, people shouldn't lose track of the fact that Barbaro has two problems, and I still have to focus on the injury to his right rear."
Finally, Effective Pain Management Control: The one factor that has allowed Barbaro to do so well fighting his laminitis: "It's hard to pick one thing because there are many factors. The first thing is that our timing on the procedure that was done with the hoof resection was good. If I had to pick ONE, I would have to say our ability to manage pain early on was helpful. I think our pain management techniques in the early stages of laminitis were very successful."
Current Chances of Laminitis Spreading: "Right now, his chances of developing it in his front feet are fairlly low because he is healthy and bearing good weight on both hind limbs. If he has any serious setback in term of his hindlimb comfort, his front feet will definitely be at more risk."
Longterm Chances For Barbaro's Full Recovery: "I still believe there is a chance to save him to be a comfortable breeding stallion, capable of naturally covering mares."

BARBARO's TIME CAPSULE: From ICU To The Great Outdoors

THIS MORNING's BARBARO UPDATE: From VET UPENN & ALEX: Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro continues to do well, and is being hand-grazed for 20 - 30 minutes a day. "His blood work is completely normal and his vital signs are good," said Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "I can't complain. Barbaro has had a very good week." Dr. Richardson also reports that Barbaro is no longer using the sling. "His comfort level has improved to the point that when he was in the sling, he wasn't "using" it at all. The sling is only bearing the horse's weight when he wants it to, and Barbaro's comfort level has improved to the point that he was not using the sling to support his weight."

BARBARO UPDATE: Kathy Anderson just called (7:45 pm) and she was just leaving Barbaro, who was laid down, in an upright position, eating fresh picked grass from a bowl! As she was leaving his masseuse was arriving, who prefers to massage him laying down as he is then less active. Kathy's report was upbeat.

Last evening at about 6:45 pm EST, Bloodhorse.com hosted a special editon featuring questions and live responses with Dr. Dean Richardson, Barbaro's chief surgeon and lifesaver. Since the Preakness accident back on May 20, 2006 to date, New Bolton Center's orthopedic horse surgeon has been in the public eye. Largely due to Barbaro's extremely high profile case, there has been overwhelming requests for more accurate information about our "Charismatic" Hero.

Over 400 requests came in and a moderator reviewed those most relevant. All however, were forwarded to staff at NBC because a phenomenal number also sent encouraging words and concerns for the NBC Team caring for Barbaro. Ron Mitchell, editor for Talkin Horses thanked everyone for their participation.

Summarizing, there were four major areas of strong interest which are:

First - How Barbaro's case has affected Dr. Richardson emotionallly and professionally.

Second - Barbaro's ICU care related to daily rituals for his fractured right hind leg and resected laminitic hoof. Dr. Richardson reveals higher % of hoof removed and why.

Third - involved Laminitis and progression of his recovery and possible setbacks

And fourth - how effective Pain Control plays a critical comfort role for healing in Barbaro's full recovery. What is his prognosis longterm.

Excerpts follow: (Alex Brown thinks like we do....hmm)

"The only reason I became a vet was because I fell in love with horses. I became very involved working with them. If you do that, you get to the point where you love working on horses. I can't deny the fact that (Barbaro) he is very smart and particularly a charismatic horse. He is remarkably quick to pick up when you are trying to help him. Those are the sorts of things that make you like the horse a lot. You are also talking about being in the presence of greatness. And, I think he truly was a great horse who did not have the chance to show it. All those things combined, it is hard not to be emotionally involved with it. I also have a long relationship with and like for the Jacksons and the Matzes."

Responding to emotional attachment and Barbaro's intelligence he said, " I have been very attached to a lot of my patients. The type of work I do (unfortunately) does not always result in a quick fix, so some of my successes and many of my failures stay in the hospital for a long time. I became a veterinarian because I loved horses, so it isn't too hard to get attached to those that you work on for a long time. I am certainly not alone. We have had patients that are so popular that the nursing staff will show up to see them when they come back to the hospital for a follow-up visit."

Also, "I personally care a lot about the equine industry and I want people to understand that there are people like the Jacksons who truly care about their horses...Professionally, my favorite part initially was the challenge of the procedure and the aftercare. My favorite part now is simply trying to save his life. He is a very personable young colt, truly charismatic."

Second - Regarding Barbaro's ICU care: "He gets ICU checks by the nurses four times daily (vital signs, checking how much he's eating, drinking, manure/urine production etc.). He is fed grain mixes, four times daily. He receives free choice alfalfa and timothy hay mix. I change his Left hind foot bandage around 6 am and walk him about 30 minutes in the late afternoon. He is no longer being put in a sling. Previously, we were letting him out of the sling from about 7 pm until 9 am. The Jacksons and Mr. Matz visit at various times and Mrs. Jackson always brings some Lael Farm grass hand picked for him. He gets groomed and bathed at various times. Medications are given at various intervals. Previously, he was on a number of constant intravenous infusions and epidural pain medication. His management is much simpler right now because he is doing so well."

More...referencing Barbaro's hoof resection: "The hoof wall (the hard keratinized portion) including his sole was removed. We eventually removed about 90% of it. The time to completely regrow a hoof varies, but a reasonable estimate would be about 9 - 12 months. He will be considered out of the woods when there's an acceptably strong structure to his Left Hind foot and complete integrity, comfort, and strength in his Right Hind leg... "I thought he was thrilled the first time he went out. He just seemed very happy to be out. You can tell he's looking forward to it every day. It's absolutely normal. Horses love to be outside. Obviously he's pretty excited about it. It's a big step just to know he feels good enough that you can take him out of the stall and walk him around like a normal horse and he eats grass like a normal horse. That does not mean he is healed. It just means things are going well right now." Dr. Richardson spoke with AP reporters in a phone interview yesterday afternoon.

Presently for the past 7 days and upcoming ones Barbaro hand-grazes (using a shank to keep him from running off) for about 15 - 20 minutes in a secluded area close to George D. Widener Hospital's ICU.

However, keeping flies away is no easy task.

"He's lost a lot of tail and it's short so it's hard for him to swish away flies," chuckled Dr. Richardson. Barbaro was showed enjoying himself on ABC NEWS recently released VIDEO:

Dr. Richardson further stated, " He is more comfortable in his left hind foot than I thought he would be. The right hind leg/foot is about where I thought it would be. He's got to get this left hind foot to the point where it's a solid structure that can sustain longterm weight-bearing. Could there still be some major things resulting in him having to be put down? Yeah, he's absolutely not out of the woods yet."

Last Tuesday, Barbaro had his right hind leg cast changed successfully and Dr. Richardson hopes it will not have to be changed for another 3 weeks. Barbaro's left hoof remains the Chief Surgeon's biggest concern since the 3 year-old must completely regrow his left hoof resected with 80 % removal to save his life from life-threatening laminitic infection. UPDATE: August 16, 2006 Bobby's LEFT HOOF and LAMINAE are expected to take at least 9 to 12 months to completely heal. There have been remote cases where the hoof regrew completely in as little as 5 to 6 months. But then again, these horses did not have only 20 % of their hoof intact. Bobby has had a radical surgical resection of his left hoof and this must be kept in mind as he regrows the other 80 %.

On a brighter note, Debra, we are thankful that you and BOND BEAUTY made it safely back home, which is the most important thing. Despite an excellent but disappointed race she held the lead most of the way until the end. Wondered -- Can you hold her back a little to preserve her energy so she has a chance to maintain full strength towards the last 100 yards? It appears from TV footage studied, this is how other champions win their races. Then again, what do I know?

Dr. Richardson is just about as happy as Barbaro is to be outdoors for the first time in almost 3 months since is multiple leg fractures requiring 6 cast changes and numerous battles with infection. For now, he is conquering them and changing people's minds on just how strong his will is to survive. Many say it is his Big Heart inside that makes him the fighting champion that he is. (referring to Roy Jackson's view that it is the heart that makes him a Champion of Champions, and a one-in-a-million horse).

Recently, there was an article by TG Smith entitled "Brave Barbaro," which appeared in the Morris Daily Herald August 10, 2006. Obviously, it seems he received outdated information on Barbaro's rehabilitation now stepping up to better reports from New Bolton Center where
he remains stable but in serious condition. Joyous news from Good Morning America's Video clips show Barbaro and Dr. Richardson enjoying a 15 minute first day outting together on Friday, August 11, 2006.

Since Barbaro continues to improve each day, we had to respond to TG Smith's article, especially since he was ready to "give up" and request a name change which you will see in the following reply back to such an absurdity. True, mistakes happened to the Great Champion Ferdinand, 1986 Kentucky Derby Winner, who ended up in a Japanese slaughter house. This will not be the case for Barbaro by a longshot. Nor will he suffer that fate which we cannot dignify because nobody cared what happened to Ferdinand. The Jacksons are nothing like Ferdinand's former owers who rigidly followed the cardinal rule: "Thou shall not fall in love with a racehorse." Whoever made up the rule forgot it is merely a guideline - not immortalized in stone.

Everyone who meets Barbaro is changed by him. His soulful swagger, strength, courage, and lively love can melt even Scrooge's cold heart if he were here today.

Hopefully, by reading the following letter TG Smith will have a positive tone ringing in his next major headliner like "Barbaro Outsmarts Reports Betting The Odds."

So far, Barbaro is amazing everyone including Dr. Richardson who was quoted as not understanding how Barbaro is doing miraculously better and not feeling pain like other horses who have gone through something similiar. With improved medicine and care, we have come a long way since Seabiscuit's and Your Honor's The Magnificent Cripple.

We have an inside source and been sending special Springtime Spirulina and Horse Joint Care nutritionals (background in nutrition science) for Barbaro care of Dr. Richardson. Since he started Barbaro on these, there has been a remarkable turnaround. The President of Amerdon also sent a case

Barbaro's Legacy has placed Fair Hill center stage

Dr. Kathleen Anderson, Fair Hill's veterinarian is focused

Barbaro Amazes While He Grazes

While Barbaro now enjoys short walks and grazing
for himself, there was elation in Gretchen Jackson's
voice telling Michael Matz the good news.
"You'll never guess where I am. I'm outside with
Barbaro and he's eating grass!"
Matz replied to reporters, " I was very
happy to hear that. It was the first time he's
been outside since the day he arrived there."

Prior to Barbaro's first outting, University of
Pennsylvania's NBC volunteers were hand-
picking and feeding him fresh grass daily.
The term Hand grazing means Barbaro
is kept on a shank end so he cannot run
free per Dr. Anderson.

Dr. Dean Richardson said that Bobby
would graze daily for about 15 - 20
minutes "as long as he behaves."
Michael Matz echoed, "He's always
been calm when taken out to graze."

According to Dr. Anderson, this is
Barbaro's next step in his Rehabilitation,
ie. "it is safe to walk him a short distance."

His foundering 6 weeks ago prevented
this phase of his therapy. Also, his right
leg healing from multiple fractures was
still not strong enough to walk him
outside until Friday, August 11, 2006.

Barbaro "brightened noticeably" when
he was led on his first trip outdoors by
Susan Danner, Michael's farm assistant.

Dr. Richardson continues to be "very pleased"
with Bobby's progress along with "his measurably
gaining weight and overall great attitude."
However, in and Assocated Press phone interview,
he made it clear "Barbaro is not out of the woods
yet" and cautioned getting too overly optimistic.

Barbaro Is On The Mend
For the first time in almost 3 months,
Barbaro and Dr. Richardson enjoy

brief moments in grass near the ICU.

Dr. Richardson felt Barbaro could

begin handgrazing and "was ready

for a change of scenery outside to

pick his own grass."
Dr. Richardson elaborated that in

addition to this short time oudoors

with fresh air and sunshine --

"If he remains this comfortable,

he will be hand-grazed daily."
"I am very pleased with his progress.

His appetite remains strong, he sleeps well,
and we continue to monitor him closely.
He is measurably gaining weight and his overall

attitude remains great. His condition remains stable but serious."

Sabina's photos show the right hind cast on his leg enclosed
and extending just below the hock. The bandage on his left hind

foot support it as well as other front leg wraps supporting them

in efforts to prevent further laminitis.

VIDEO itself shows Barbaro moving around with Dr. Richardson

and his grazing some grass. He was permitted about 20 minutes

in the area and if he continues to do well the time may be

extended for longer. But it is still baby steps one day to the next.

Other Dr. Richardson quotes from the Associated Press wire

service are:

"It's a big step just to know he feels good enough that you can take
him out of the stall and walk him around like a normal horse and he
eats grass like a normal horse," Dean Richardson, chief surgeon
at the New Bolton Center, said Monday. "That doesn't mean
he's healed. It just means things are going well right now."and"
I thought he was thrilled the first time he went out," Richardson
said in a telephone interview from New Bolton. "He just seemed
very happy to be out. You can tell he's looking forward to it every
day. It's absolutely normal. Horses love to be outside, obviously,
and he's pretty excited about it."and"I think we're lucky his tissues
are fairly healthy," Richardson said. "I don't know why he's more
comfortable than some horses with the same condition."

AAAAHHH....It was so good to feel the sun warming my face and smell fresh air and munch on some grass for myself. Love the hand feeding but I do like to try getting back to my ole self. Know Sabina's pictures show me with my ribs showing but I'm eating healthy and slowly gaining some back.Surprising everybody here! Dr. Richardson is scratching his head wondering why I do not feel uncomfortable. Think it's all the tender loving care, prayers, super nutritionals and treats people give me and those OOOOOOOHHHHHH so loving massages. Boy, I could go for one right now. Our Champion continues to improve slowly but according to Dr. Richardson, "Barbaro is not out the woods yet. He is doing a lot better than expected at this point in time." Both were seen outside enjoying warm sunshine together and appeared to be happy and in good spirits. Barbaro was moving around pretty well grazing in New Bolton's Center paddock area. News came in that Gretchen Jackson visited with Barbaro outdoors for a 15 - 20 minute stretch. This is the first time Barbaro could graze safely outside...She says "intermittent baby steps each day. That's all we can expect for now." Edgar Prado heard that Barbaro enjoyed a bit of outdoor
sun on Thursday, August 10, 2006. However brief it was, it is a good sign. Let's pray we hear more good steps for Bobby. Sources can't confirm what time exactly but he did enjoy a brief stretch www.vet.upenn.edu.

August 13, 2006 update on THE BARBARO FUND.

According toGail Luciani, Director of Communications for UPENN Veterinary School, she wants

people to know that the money donated is not for Barbaro. It is for ongoing patient care and expansion of the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals. Superbrains Match Wits With Barbaro

Fondly dubbed Barbaro's "Jolly Jumper" Sling, its genius innovator is Dr. John Madigan - Equine Emergency Veterinarian at UC DAVIS, Southern California. His superbrain designed the Anderson Sling which we see Kentucky Derby Winner Barbaro using since life-threatening laminitis suddenly developed and he underwent necessary hoof resection 4 weeks ago.

Superbrain Dr. Dean Richardson discovered Barbaro's acute abscessing laminitis which can develop without warning. The only way to save his left hind hoof and laminae was to perform a radical hoof resection to prevent the laminae breaking and dying. If he had not, the likelihood of keeping it from worsening was slim. If left untreated, it increases the risk of founder - where his coffin bone (middle toe) could have pulled away from his hoof wall, dropping and rotating down through his sole's soft padding beneath his abscessed heel.

While recovering from this and multiple fractures in his right leg, Dr. Madigan's Anderson Sling
became a vital life support system for America's beloved Hero. It allows him to rest his sensitive
foot, giving him time to "fully recover" from his leg fractures and resected laminitic hoof.

He is adapting extremely well to the special sling which provides immediate relief from painful pressure associated with laminitis and swelling. Hopefully, this along with pain medications,
supportive cast dressings, and special nutritionals with tender loving care will greatly reduce the
laminitis spreading to his other hooves -- a valid concern by Dr. Richardson and Medical Team Barbaro.

With top ICU care, Barbaro rests in the sling guided by friendly assistive hands which he intelligently understands. The sling itself is powered by a hydraulic system "that lowers the door to the ground and uses a winch to pull it up. It can be used to lift a stretcher and a horse safely into an ambulance. It also acts as a moveable supportive wall that can gently squeezes a standing horse
to support it safely during transport to a veterinary emergency room hospital." Dr. Madigan states
that this sling has saved hundreds of horses unable to get off the ground by themselves. Hopefully,
this device will continue to save tens of thousands more.

Meanwhile, one of Barbaro's favorite things to do is use the sling as a "buttocks and back legs" support enabling him to sit on his hind legs like your "special dog friend" begging for treats. His humorous stance amazes everyone. He's remaining bright and chipper according to Dr. Anderson who recently visited him. And what an appetite! He cannot wait to get his load of special baby
carrots topped with baby greens while resting in his sling or standing fully upright!

Besides hopping around a bit in his "Jolly Jumper" Sling, he loves to give surprise nuzzley lovebites on human shoulders. Could be he's saying, "Hey, got any more treats? Are you awake
(especially 2d or 3d shift)? Careful now, with those long needles. Oh, I'll be really good if you give me another nice, long massage!"

That's Barbaro's humorously light side. But when it comes to matching wits, think Drs. Richardson and Madigan have found it in Barbaro's superbrain!

"Kentucky Derby Winner Barbaro is doing well this morning after the cast on his right hind limb was changed late yesterday afternoon under general anesthesia." According to Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief Surgeon , "The leg looked good under the cast, especially considering the length of time he has been in a cast. The radiographs were also encouraging. There is no sign of infection. This is further supported by his markedly improving blood values over the past two weeks.

He had an excellent pool recovery. He is a very intelligent horse and definitely figured out the whole process. The appearance on his left foot is very good. It is dry and healthy-looking with excellent early regrowth at the coronary band.

The cast in Barbaro's right hind leg encloses his foot and extends up just below the hock. It will continue to be changed regularly until the fractures have healed completely enough to sustain full weight-bearing. The bandage and protective boot on his laminitic left hind foot continue to be changed and rechecked for any signs of infection."

Barbaro continues to remain in stable but serious condition in the (ICU) Intensive Care Unit at University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals at New Bolton Center.
He is recovering from serious injuries including a dislocated hock, 5 surgeries related to stabilize his multiple right leg fractures and left hoof resected because of acuteLaminitis. Originally, he suffered breakdown at Preakness in Pimlico May 20, 2006.
